Herndon Home

The Herndon House Museum is located in Atlanta, Georgia and was designated a National Landmark in 2000.  The Home was designed by Adrienne Herndon, wife of Alonzo Herndon, who was the founder & president of Atlanta Life Insurance Company. He was one of the wealthiest African Americans at the time of his death in 1927.  The Herndon Home was constructed by all African American craftsmen with the exception of the plumbing and electrical systems. According to the Herndon Home website, “A sterling example of upper income dwellings in the early 1900’s, the Home’s interior draws upon various design traditions, including the renaissance revival forms of the reception hall and dining room, and the Rococo detailing of the music room.”

In an effort to learn more about the Herndon Home I had a brief interview with Ms. Julissa J. White-Smith, Programs Director.  I was curious to find out about what individuals can learn when they enter the Georgian Revival style home.  “When a person enters the home, they will gain what they are open to learning,” states Ms. White. “The Herndon Legacy, the styles, community involvement and the uniqueness of the Herndon Family being the ONLY family occupying the home are other things.” This is quite fascinating because typically homes of this caliber have multiple owners.

I am always searching for ways that you as the reader can learn and help sustain these institutions.  I inquired from Ms. White-Smith how myself or someone else can assist in the efforts of the Herndon Home.  “The encouragement of visitors and volunteers are the ways the museum can continue to move forward. There are several opportunities to volunteer at the Herndon Home with gardening, maintenance and anyone who is open to giving love and attention to the Home.”

I fell in love with the Herndon Home the moment I set foot in the door in 2003 when I first discovered my passion for museums. This love has departed and I encourage you to visit and explore the home to understand why I gained such an affection for this astonishing and breathtaking structure.
